![]() Perhaps this is part of the appeal – wondering if we’d have had the stuffing to do that job, how the monastic life would have suited us. ![]() I like my own company I’m not easily bored I might feel at home on the sea. Some requested transferrals from these extreme posts, unhappy at the quarantine and cabin fever. They were happy enough on land lights, island (or rock) lights too, but dreaded the towers. I imagined the feeling of stepping off a boat after a long crossing, legs turned to jelly, the earth unreliable. The land life was too fast, too confusing, too broad compared with the narrow comfort of a tower whose boundaries never changed. Ashore was where these keepers felt rudderless, every eight weeks having to go home and reinsert themselves into normal life, be an ordinary man again, a husband and father. Didn’t they get lonely? No, it was the other way round. The lighthouse didn’t just offer safe harbour to passing ships, it offered these men the same. They considered the lighthouse to be perfect isolation, peace, calm – a chance to exist in the moment (what, in today’s world, we might call mindfulness). They made friends with the sea, they prophesied the weather, they pursued pastimes of painting, reading, putting ships in bottles. Some lighthouse keepers loved the life – more, they needed it. I read as many first-person accounts as I could: memoirs, autobiographies, the narrative interviews in Tony Parker’s superlative book, Lighthouse. I wanted to discover what made these keepers tick – why they did this job and at what cost it came. The further I rowed in uncharted waters, the more immersed I became. I’ve tried to trace it back – perhaps to my grandma’s house on the Isle of Wight, where I’d stare out of her staircase window at the grey Solent and the distant chimneys of Fawley power station or was it the Norfolk windmill we stayed in at half-terms, the wonder of those circular rooms and the winding ascent to the gallery, from which white trellis sails gleamed like ladders to the sky? I wanted to know why keepers did this job and at what cost it came Recently, I was asked what prompted this interest. It wasn’t until my 20s that the fascination clicked. I had visited a few land lights as a child and probably professed myself bored. It seemed a miracle it could stay standing.īefore I started researching my book, I knew nothing, really, about lighthouses. Rocks smashed the base, clunking and groaning. During a storm, the whole tower would quiver as if caught in an electrical current. Inside, it was stuffy and dark, thick with smells of sweat and tobacco and burned bacon, shutters closed in heavy weather, double windows fastened against waves that could chuck salt-spray 85ft into the air, smacking the panes while you’re drinking your tea. ![]() ![]() Rooms piled one on top of the other, a couple of strides across and that’s it, no way out, nowhere else to go. Before then, three men lived out there on that distant, hostile post for two months at a stretch.Īll they had was each other and the sea. Today, every lighthouse in the UK is automated: the last to go electric was in 1998. Now peer further, deep into the haze, and on a clear day you might pick out the matchstick vertical of the notorious Wolf Rock, eight nautical miles out, so called because of the howling sound the wind makes as it tunnels between the rocks. Stand at Land’s End and you’ll see the Longships – not too far, only a mile away. Tower lighthouses exist like mirages on the horizon. There are many hotel options in Saskatoon and plenty close by The Night Oven, too. Turn dessert at The Night Oven Bakery into a day trip or a weekend and explore Saskatoon’s Caswell Hill and Riversdale areas! No matter what he’s baking, Rawlyk notes his philosophy is centered on ensuring that plenty of thought and time go into every single item. Depending on when you’re visiting, you just might be able to enjoy the bakery's seasonal and weekly items, too – including wood-fired pizza, which is available only on Fridays. Sourdough loaves made with heritage grains, such as the lentil rye bread or red fife whole wheat bread, are all baked in a wood-fired oven, while French-inspired pastries like croissants and galettes are done in both sweet and savoury flavours. I don’t tend to get hung up about the fact that clients could use Hubspot or Zoho or other CRM systems that kind of serve the same purpose. ![]() That lead is then fed into the CRM system, I tend to use Pipedrive. This could come from something like Google Ads or Facebook Lead Ads or something along those lines. Let’s look at how some of the systems that that we implement would support this particular type of business. Some way for the customer to come back to them potentially buying spare parts or service or whatever that may be beyond the original purchase. There is a maintenance period or an aftercare period. This may also connect at the beginning so you may need to invoice the client before you start the work as well as when you’ve completed so you’ll need a connection to your finance system and then for some businesses that’s not the end of their relationship with the client. ![]() There’s a piece of operation before it’s delivered and then if you imagine this is where the project is managed or whether the product is customised and then once that’s delivered generally there’s a connection to the finance system. I dealt with a couple of clients recently who do bathroom fittings or installations for shelving and racking within warehouses so each of those items needs to be put together. I’m thinking more about customised products so particularly something in the construction industry. Quite often there’s an email client connected to their system and then this moves into operations and here i’m kind of talking about operations where it’s not e-commerce or it’s not something on a shelf in a box and that you just take it off the shelf. This is how we see a typical business and how all of the flows are in place so starting on the left here is a typical flow from lead generation, generally something from connected to the internet or their sales and marketing function through their CRM. So let’s take a look at a typical business. So today i’m going to take you through how I consider how all of the components should fit together and how they then contribute to the overall needs of a small or medium-sized business. This might be okay in a few circumstances but some of the clients who really start to feel the pain particularly when there’s a change to their business or particularly where businesses start to grow and this was the case in one client in particular. What surprised me is that not every client understood how the components fitted together and often there were either overlaps between the components or there were gaps within the system. Then how all of these systems or the individual components fit in to the overall business process. Last week i had quite a few conversations with clients many of them concentrating on one aspect of their business system, something along the lines of updating their CRM however when I review a client project I always ask about how each particular piece of the system is joined together, how they’re connected and how they pass the data between one system and another. If you’re new here my name is Chris Wray and and i’m a technology consultant and today we’re going to be talking about how Pipedrive, Asana, Airtable Zapier and other systems fit into a small business. This is a distinction many others who are disappointed need to bear in mind. YouTuber and CC creator Grimcookies has released a 17 minute rant about the project, while Sims YouTuber Deligracy, who built some of the lots that appear in the recent Snowy Escape expansion, called the palette " so sad" before stating "I t feels like EA doesn’t appreciate The Sims, it’s community or it’s success."ĭeligracy was also careful to distinguish between EA and their marketing team as being seperate from the development team, many of whom appear on socials under SimGuru handles and will have had no involvement in an external offline collaboration like this. The fact this collaboration appears to involve adding a fancy Sims branded box to an existing product has annoyed even some of the most ardent defenders of The Sims. Now you and your Sims can wear MAC!" The company also confirmed that "The packaging outer packaging is #MACxTHESims deco packaging only." This means that the branding doesn't extend past the box. Plus, it perfectly complements the 12 diverse interchangable looks created for The Sims that suit all face shapes and skin tones. In reply MAC stated "We wanted to offer a versatile palette for everyone, whether you are a makeup beginner or total expert, that easily allows you to go from natural to glam in one swipe. Many Simmers were surprised to see the neutral color scheme, which they felt didn't resemble the blues and greens usually associated with The Sims 4. On Twitter, Spill Sesh highlighted the discovery that the palette is three years old, as well as highlighting MACs responses to questions about the collaboration. ![]() While this collaboration sounds exciting on paper, the reality has been a disapointment for fans, especially once they discovered that the palette in question was originally released back in 2017. ![]() The examples in this tutorial either deal with simple processes, or they diagram complex processes superficially so that the models fit on one page. One thing to remember is that if you strive to harmonize your functional and technical process models to achieve a better alignment of business and IT, you inevitably face this type of process modeling whether you use BPMN or not. We will show the usefulness of this new thinking by example. In the medium and long terms, however, avoiding pools denies you a powerful device for increasing the significance of process models. That’s traditional, and it’s a pragmatic solution during, say, a transitional period that allows your co-workers to adapt. You can eliminate pools and work just with lanes, modeling the message exchange as normal tasks as shown before. What does that signify, however, for purely functional process modeling, in which you also describe processes not controlled by such a process engine? There’s no general answer to that question. Have you heard of service orchestration in connection with Service Oriented Architecture (SOA)? That’s almost exactly the task of a process engine, except that these services are not only fully automated web services they also can be tasks executed by human process participants as directed by the process engine. So the process engine equates to the mysterious, almighty process conductor. In that world, the process engine controls all tasks in the process, even though different task managers may execute them. Even though BPMN lanes look very much like those of other process notations, they represent an entirely different way of thinking, which we attribute to BPMN’s origin in the world of process automation. It reveals a basic principle, however, that you must understand. Well, we could equally assign before the loop starts but that feels semantically odd to me.That seems complicated – and you don’t have to choose this method for practical modeling. Then we can assign to the var parameter after the loop has completed. We declare a local which we can then capture. TParallel.&For(0, high(LocalMap), procedure(i: integer) You need to use something along these lines: procedure TestParallel(var map: TArray>) See Anonymous Methods Variable Binding:Ī key feature of anonymous methods is that they may reference variables that are visible to them where they were defined. For a var parameter, the compiler has no knowledge of where the variable is declared. The compiler has to be able to see that a capture is necessary when compiling the function that declares the variable. That fails to compile because var parameters cannot be captured. Always post real code, complete code if at all possible, as minimal as you can.Īs for your real code, that you have just posted, that looks like this: procedure TestParallel(var map: data) The big lesson here, is never to post fake code. Either you are using a different compiler from me, or have different code from me.Īnd indeed, from your question update, it turns out that you have not posted the code that does not compile. I cannot explain why you are unable to compile this code. The local variable i in TestParallel is unused, as the compiler observes, and should be removed. This code, identical to that in the question, compiles in both dcc32 and dcc64, on Delphi XE7 update 1. So, how to make this work as simple as possible? Yes, above code compiles, and the following is not (if the map array is passed as var parameter) typeīut unfortunately, the compiler says: Project2.dpr(70): E2555 Cannot capture symbol 'map' TParallel.&For(0, u, procedure(i: integer) so I try to convert a small piece of code, such as: procedure TestParallel I just know From Delphi XE7 there is Parallel. For which is cool. |
